The Rose - A Symbol Of Love

Romantic and delicate, the rose has been a symbol of love since we knew it existed. Rose’s fragility and splendor show within every petal spread on a wedding carpet…
The Rose - A Symbol Of Love
The rose has inspired people for generations; many people see the beauty of the rose as a symbol of love, its delicate petals as the caress of a loved one, its elegance is the touch of life itself.

The rose is a flower that has sparked the imagination and touched the hearts of so many people; there is no other flower that has been the highlight of a person’s day; the gift of love and happiness, bringing two people together, or the gift symbolizing the grief felt at the passing of somebody loved. The rose, this beautiful delicate flower is a flower more famous then any other in the whole world.

Most people just go to the store and pick up a bouquet, then they give it to the person it was intended for; but there are some people that grow those roses, there are some people that put a little bit of their soul in to each and every blossom, maybe you are one of those people, or maybe you want to be that person but you are not sure how to go about it.

The rose has been with us for a long time, the garden rose has been around for some 5000 years in fact, believe it or not. One of the first great growers of roses was the Roman Empire, they had huge gardens with nothing but roses in them, these roses were used for everything from medicine to making perfume. In the 15th century, we find the War of the Roses, where two different factions were symbolized by the white rose and the red rose; and it goes on all the way to modern times where the rose is a lot more then a fighting symbol or a medicine, these days the rose is beauty itself, a much wanted flower if you are planning on any type of a flower garden. A definite must!

When choosing the roses that you are going to plant in your garden make sure that you get the type of rose that will suit your purposes, do you want cutting roses or just something to make the garden beautiful? Do you have allergies or do you prefer the stronger perfume that some types of roses have?

Once you have made your choice make sure you plant them in a place that where they will get around six to eight hours of sunlight a day. The rose is a plant that loves to drink so give your plant small amounts of water at regular times during the week. Keep your rose pruned; just cut out the dead stuff every spring, you might also want to do some pruning to shape the plant, you know, just to keep it looking nice.

Keep the rose plant pruned and fertilized, just remember that when winter comes, stop fertilizing and such about one month before the first frost, it kind of puts the rose into shutdown mode.

The soil should be of a good quality, that means it needs to be able to drain well, roses do not like standing water around their roots, it may well provoke root rot. A good idea is to use compost around the plant and especially when winter is on the way, build up about an inch of extra soil around the base of the plant, this helps keep the plant warm enough during the winter and believe me the rose will love you for it!

It takes time and work to keep and raise roses but they are worth it because no other plant or flower gives so much back to you as the rose does!

The beauty that the rose has in its simple petals will last for a long time to come...because there will always be people that will love and cherish this simple flower.

In the past the rose was a symbol of war, of politics and so on….nowadays, the rose is the ultimate symbol of love, but not only that; a rose can be a little bit of a your heart given to another, such a small delicate flower but the meaning behind it can be enough to take your breath away.
